Atherton Tablelands

After visiting the Mossman Gorge, we drove southwest towards Mount Molloy and Mareeba . The landscape changes dramatically in a few kilometers and we start seeing savannah grasslands with termite moulds but it changes again when we are near Mareeba and Atherton .
Sugar cane is not as important here and huge plantations of bananas, avos, pineapples( Mareeba gold pineapples are very famous and sweety) as well as paw paws, coffee and peanuts and near Atherton a variety of vegetables is also grown.
Suddenly, our itinerary is interrupted because we have problems with our motorhome; the engine loses power and a light in the screen starts flashing. Fortunately, the next day we have it fixed up by a mechanic in Atherton and “no worries”, as aussies say.
The beauty of this area, Cairns Highlands is surprising. It is a fertile region where rural towns are spotted on hills, where humidity disappears and pastures, lakes, waterfalls, volcanic cones and different rainforests from the ones we have just visited are found. Dairy produce is also important and we visit historic mining towns like Heberton and heritage villages like Yungaburra. For the last days, we’ve seen other interesting wildlife – birds, butterflies, turtles and platypus!!!!. Apart from the road signs warning kangaroos and cassowaries , near Malanda we’ve also seen ones about tree kangaroos.
We spent two days at a very peaceful, tidy and friendly caravan park in Lake Eacham and thanks to the lady’s advice and suggestions we could see platypus in Winfield Park and seen volcanic pipes like The Crater in Mt Hypipamee. We saw the amazing Curtain Fig tree and Albert even swam in Lake Eacham, a volcanic cone, but the water was freezing.
Our last stop in the Tablelands has been the Falls Circuit, spectacular waterfalls in the rainforest like the famous Millaa Millaa even more beautiful Ellinjaa and Zillie Falls. From here we’ve driven towards Innisfall (lots of sugar cane and banana plantations again) and we are now in a caravan park in Wongaling Beach, Mission Beach, a place with 14 km of beaches, too touristy for me but with a wonderful beach and sights of some islands on the inner reef.
PS: We’ve seen our first wild kangaroo today jumping on the road!!
